Vocals for TV
I write and record music for TV
Credits include Glee (S1 E1), Fleabag (S2 E1), Randall & Hopkirk (deceased), Fear Street, Home Fires…
I also do voice-over work for children’s TV
Credits include: CBeebies Magic Hands, Taralandia (made by the creators of Peppa Pig)
Fleabag (S2E1)
I wrote this song for the television production music company Audio Network in collaboration with David Tobin and Jeff Meegan. It’s from the album "Vintage Vocal Swing” and it’s in the style of The Andrews Sisters. We recorded the songs at Abbey Road Studios with the most amazing band of musicians. I recorded the vocals with two of my favourite session singing buddies, Sara Brimer-Davey and Joanna Goldsmith Eteson. I was over the moon when it was used in the opening scene of the second series of Fleabag as I just love that show!
Vintage vocals
Here we are recording my “You are” song at Abbey Road Studios. We thought it would be fun to dress up in 1940s-style clothes to get in the right mood….
Composers: Joanna Forbes L'Estrange, David Tobin & Jeff Meegan
Vocals: Joanna Forbes L'Estrange, Sara Brimer Davey & Joanna Goldsmith Eteson
Band: Colin Good (piano), Ant Law (guitar), Tom Farmer (upright bass), Mike Smith (drums), Mark Crooks (clarinet), Howard McGill (alto sax/flute), Phil Todd (tenor sax/flute), Enrico Tomasso (trumpet), Malcolm Earle Smith (trombone).
Hollywood vocals
Ever since I can remember, I have always loved Julie Andrews’ voice for its purity of tone and clear diction. I recorded two songs on the Golden Age of Hollywood album for Audio Network and channelled her voice in order to get the sound right.
Swingle-style vocals
My background as a Swingle singer has been very useful for my work as a vocalist for television….as you can hear in this advert for Vanish carpet cleaner!
Arrangement by Alexander L’Estrange and Ben Parry
Glee (S1E1)
In this clip of the pilot episode of Glee, you can hear my arrangement for The Swingles of Beethoven’s Moonlight Sonata. I recorded it with The Swingles on our Keyboard Classics album.
Voice-over for Children’s Television
As a child, if anyone ever asked me what I wanted to be when I grew up, I would reply "Blue Peter presenter". Being a voice-over artist for CBeebies is the next best thing, I reckon. I love working on "Magic Hands" being the voice of Mia for dialogue and songs. Although I'm a professionally-trained singer, I can make my voice sound very young which works well for programmes aimed at pre-school children.
Randall & Hopkirk (deceased)
I arranged and recorded the backing vocals for The Swingles for Jarvis Cocker’s track “My Body May Die”. The recording credits list us as The Swingle Sisters but that’s a typo! It should say PULP vs The Swingle Singers….
Home Fires theme
I recorded this theme by Samuel Sim with members of Synergy Vocals, directed by Micaela Haslam.
